MQI deplores Karachi target killings

Dr Raheeq Ahmad Abbasi, Secretary General of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, has expressed his deep concern over the unending spate of target killings in Karachi. He said that these killings prove that our politicians have not learnt any lessons from history and are bent on repeating the past. He said that democracy was not merely confined to electoral process. Rather it was a long drawn-out process and involved nurturing democratic traditions starting from reform of one’s personal self. He said that our previous democratic experiments failed because our political parties allowed party interest to ride roughshod over national interests and went to any level to achieve their narrow-minded objectives.

Dr Raheeq Abbasi expressed these views while delivering his keynote speech at a seminar entitled as “Future of Democracy in Pakistan”. He said that the use of force to impose one’s agenda and elimination of political opponents went against the original democratic values. “The way politicians continue to behave shows that democracy is merely a sham and it is the pastime of the rich and moneyed classes who have no interest in promoting public agenda,” he held.

Dr Abbasi urged the political forces of Sindh to exercise restraint and resolve their mutual differences through dialogue and engagement. He said that it was in view of the reality of the democracy that Pakistan Awami Tehreek said a good bye to the electoral politics and launched its struggle for peaceful change in the society through other means.
