Right to protest: Bailiff appointed to recover PAT workers

LAHORE: An additional district and sessions judge on Saturday directed a bailiff to produce nearly 11,000 activists of Pakistan Awami Tehreek in the court after recovering them from police detention.

The order was passed on a petition filed by PAT general secretary Mian Amjad who said nearly 11,000 PAT activists were being held at various police stations.

He said there were 4,000 women and children among them. He said the PAT chairman had announced a Yom-i-Shohada (martyr’s day) to pay tribute to those killed in a police operation in front of Minhajul Quran office in Model Town.

He said the inspector general, the capital city police officer, the Operations DIG, Model Town superintendent, the Faisal Town station house officer, the Punjab home secretary and the chief secretary had ordered all roads leading to Minhajul Quran by placing containers.

He said on August 8, a heavy police contingent had detained thousands of PAT activists.

He said they were neither released nor provided food to eat. He asked the court to depute a bailiff to recover the activists. He also asked for permission to take food to the detained people.

The judge deputed a bailiff and directed him to produce the detained people by August 11. The petitioner was directed to accompany the bailiff to point out the places where they were being held.
